"Those who are happiest, are those who do the most for others." ~Booker T. Washington

We Care Residential originally started out as a curious thought to give back. While serving on a ministry team at my church, I had the desire to serve some place where I was needed. I was informed about the Special Olympics needing volunteers. I had heard of this here and there but really had no idea what went on. Something inside drove me to help. I didn't know what I was going to do nor what I was going to see. I just knew they needed assistance.

What I got myself into was a day full of fun, laughter and wonderful attitudes. I truly entered this arena not knowing anything about Intellectual Disability or general learning disability...which is the preferred term for mental retardation (ID/MR). This experience was truly amazing. The individual's drive and hard work thorough the competitions inspired me. Here I thought I came to help and make a difference, but it ended up being the other way around. I was exposed to a misunderstood, unknown population in the world. Through this event I felt happy, excited and touched...and ready for more.

I looked for a local adult group home where I volunteered a few hours a day; a few days a week. I was there so much I was considered staff. It was like a second home to me. I was able to see what a day was like to someone with ID/MR as well as a variety of their struggles as well as talents. That wasn't enough for me. I was there so much and learned so much that I started to question how certain things were done. I came up with all sorts of ideas and suggestions. I soon realized, as a volunteer, they can only stay ideas and suggestions unless many others agree. I am in no way upset that they didn't agree with me. I thank them because it helped me to find the drive to take me caring and create We Care. I couldn't be the only person who wanted to do more, provide more, educate more and serve more. I wanted to implement the wonderful thoughts that ran in my mind. I adopted the model; "If you are going to do something, go all out!"

I had already had much training and understood how a group home was run. I began to further my education; taking various courses, researching and interviewing with other owners and licensure officials. I looked into different locations for the home as well as created a plan of activities and destinations that I wanted my future clients to partake in.

After two years of dedicated work and research, me saying "I care", turned into me saying, "We Care". Not only do I have this deep passion for this population, so does my staff. I take training seriously just as much as I take having fun and providing programs and activities for the clients seriously. We are dedicated to providing a wonderful atmosphere where any of our houses are not considered a group home...but home.

"The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" But the good Samaritan revered the question..."If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?" ~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
